We use little phrases every day; we say some of them incorrectly as in “tender hooks” instead of “tenterhooks” or “a damp squid” instead of “a damp squib” but we get the message. 

But where did they come from in the first place? 

Sitting in my local pub one evening one of the phrases below was said and Michael said what does that really mean and where does it come from? That gave us an idea for this little pocket book. It would be nearly

impossible to put all of these sayings we use here as there are so many.

Also it is very difficult to find out the true/correct meaning and where they originated from as some references refer to at least two if not three meanings and /or origins. You

are more than welcome to disagree with us and if that’s the case write into us with your new explanations.

So inside our book you will find, hopefully the reasoning behind the more commonly used ones.
